Martha Stringfellow, b. Jan. 24, 1824, d. Mar. 25, 1909

[Oskaloosa Daily Herald - Friday, March 26, 1909] STRINGFELLOW - Died, of dropsy at her home in Rose Hill, at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, March 25, after an illness of 3 months, Mrs. Martha Stringfellow, aged 85 years, 2 months and 1 day. Funeral from the Wymore church Sunday March 28, at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. S. H. Zendt, pastor of the Christian church at Oskaloosa. Interment in Wymore cemetery. "Grandma" Stringfellow, as she was called by all who knew her, was a remarkable old lady in many ways and her death causes general regret in the neighborhood of her residence and in the county. She was the widow of William Stringfellow, who died about 22 years ago. She was the mother of 10 children, 8 of whom survive and at the time of death had 25 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. The surviving sons are B. C. Stringfellow, of Tonganoxie, Kansas. George W. and Henry T., of Rose Hill; Granville of Garlington, Texas, and Charles of California. The daughters are Mrs. Frankie Jensen of Clarence, Missouri; Mrs. Elizabeth Smith of Des Moines; Mrs. Ann Blackstone of Lovillia. The deceased was born in Kentucky January 24, 1824. She has been a resident of Mahaska county through a period of 56 years. She has been prominent in the affairs of her neighborhood and was dearly beloved by all who had known her.
